Rotten Fascia — what's actually going on

Peeling paint, soft timber or rotten rafter ends behind the eaves.

Common causes

  • Original timber painted over rather than replaced
  • Persistent gutter overflow rotting the board behind
  • Missing eaves ventilation trapping moisture
  • Bird and squirrel damage at exposed eaves gaps

How we fix it

  • Strip back to sound timber; scarf in any rotten rafter ends
  • Fit full uPVC fascia and soffit with built-in vent strip
  • Re-hang gutters to correct falls on new brackets
  • Fit bird combs where the eaves gap is exposed

Fascia and soffit replacement: what actually happens on the day

A full roofline replacement on a semi-detached house is normally a two to three day job: scaffold or tower access, strip out the old boards and gutters, inspect and repair the rafter feet, fit ventilated soffits and capped fascias, then hang new gutters to a correct fall and clear site.

uPVC vs timber fascias and soffits

uPVC has become the default, but painted timber is still the correct answer on some properties. The choice comes down to maintenance appetite and the character of the building.
