Scaffolding: when it is needed and what it adds
Scaffolding is the line most people query and the line least worth cutting. It is also the honest test of a quote, because leaving it out is the easiest way to make a price look competitive while quietly making the job someone else's problem.
Scaffolding is required whenever people are working along a roof rather than at a single spot, whenever materials have to be loaded out, and whenever a fall could not be prevented another way. Small, localised repairs can often be done safely from a ladder and roof ladder.
When it is unavoidable
Full and partial re roofs, chimney rebuilds, fascia and guttering replacement along a whole elevation, and anything where materials are being moved along the roof. In these cases the platform is the workplace, not a convenience.
When a tower or ladder is genuinely enough
A single slipped tile, a gutter clear out, a small flashing repair at low level, or an inspection. We will tell you when this is the case rather than adding a scaffold to inflate the total. Working from a ladder is a decision made on the day by the people at height, based on pitch, condition and weather.
What you are actually paying for
Design where needed, delivery, erection, the hire period, the weekly inspection where required, and the strike and collection at the end. Erection and strike are fixed. The hire period is the variable, and it is why weather delays on a long job cost money.
Pavement licences and permits
Scaffolding on a public footway needs a licence from the local authority, which takes time and carries a fee. Corner plots, bus routes and busy high street elevations are the slow ones. We arrange this and build the lead time into the programme rather than springing it on you.
Neighbours and shared access
Terraces and semis often need a scaffold leg in next door's garden, or an oversail over their boundary. Asking early and in person is far more effective than a letter the week before, and it prevents the most common cause of a stalled start.
How to make the scaffold pay for itself
While it is up, do the guttering, the fascia, the chimney pointing and any external decorating at high level. The access is already paid for and the marginal cost of the extra work is much lower than doing it as its own job later.
Safety is not optional
Roof work is the largest single cause of fatal falls in UK construction. A quote that dispenses with access to save money is not a saving, and no guarantee is worth much from a firm that works that way.
