Emergency roof repair: what happens when you call
Water coming through a ceiling or tiles on the drive after a storm is stressful. Knowing what an emergency visit should achieve, and what you can safely do yourself, makes the situation easier to manage.
Water coming in right now? We prioritise active leaks across Hampton, Twickenham, Teddington and the wider TW and KT postcodes.
Call 07748 750711An emergency roof repair has two stages. First the roof is made safe: loose material secured or removed, and the opening covered so no more water gets in. Then, once the cause and extent are understood, a permanent repair is quoted and carried out. While you wait, keep people clear, contain the water and take photographs.
First steps inside the house
Move people, furniture and electrical items away from the leak. Put buckets or containers under drips. If a ceiling is bulging with water, keep everyone out of the room; a controlled small hole in the lowest point, made from a safe position, can release the water before the ceiling gives way. If water is near light fittings or sockets, switch off that circuit at the consumer unit.
Outside: stay off the roof
Do not climb onto a wet or wind-damaged roof or lean ladders against damaged gutters. Keep people away from areas below loose tiles, ridge pieces or chimney pots. If debris has fallen onto a pavement or road, keep the area clear and warn neighbours.
Record everything
Photograph the damage inside and out, the date and weather, and anything that has fallen. Keep damaged items rather than throwing them away. Note when water first appeared. Insurers ask for this, and a clear record of what happened makes later decisions simpler. The insurance claims guide explains the process in more detail.
What making safe involves
The first visit secures the roof: removing or refixing loose tiles and ridge pieces, clearing debris from valleys and gutters, and covering the opening with a secured sheet or temporary patch so water can no longer enter. Chimney pots or stacks that are unstable are secured or taken down. The aim is to stop further damage, not to finish the job in bad weather.
Finding the real cause
Water can travel a long way along rafters and membrane before it shows on a ceiling, so the drip is not always under the fault. Once safe access is possible, the roof is inspected from outside and, where helpful, from the loft to trace the route. Blocked gutters, failed flashings, slipped tiles and storm-lifted edges are all common culprits.
Temporary and permanent repairs
A temporary cover buys time; it is not a lasting fix. The permanent repair might be replacing tiles, relaying a ridge, renewing a flashing, repairing a flat roof or, where the roof is at the end of its life, replacing a section. That is quoted after inspection so you can see what is essential and what can be planned.
Drying out afterwards
Wet insulation should be lifted or replaced, because it stays damp and loses its effect. Ceilings and walls need time to dry before redecorating. Staining that returns after the repair points to moisture still trapped in the structure or to a second fault, both worth checking.
Preventing the next emergency
Many emergency calls follow problems that were visible earlier: a slipped tile, a sagging gutter or cracked mortar on a ridge. A check after winter and after major storms, and keeping gutters clear, catches most of them. The storm damage inspection checklist lists what to look for from the ground.
FAQs
Keep people clear, contain the water, switch off electrics near the leak, stay off the roof and photograph everything.
No. It stops water getting in until the cause is found and a permanent repair is done.
Water runs along rafters and membrane before it drips, so it can appear some distance from the fault.
It depends on your policy and the cause. Sudden storm damage is treated differently from wear and tear.
