Scaffolding for roof work: when you need it and what it costs
Scaffolding is often the largest single line on a roofing quote, and it is the line most often left off the cheapest quote you receive.
When a scaffold is genuinely required
Any work at the ridge, chimney work, full re-roofs, fascia and gutter replacement along a run, and anything where the roofer needs both hands and a stable platform for more than a few minutes.
When it isn't
A single accessible slipped tile low on the slope, a gutter clear, or an inspection can often be done safely from ladders and a roof ladder. We won't add a scaffold to a job that doesn't need one.
What drives the scaffold price
Number of lifts (height), the run length, whether it needs to go round a corner or over a conservatory, a bridged section for extensions, and the hire period. Longer jobs mean longer hire.
Pavement and highway licences
If the scaffold stands on a public footpath, the local authority requires a licence and that cost sits on the job. Terraced frontages in the borough are the usual case.
Sharing the cost across jobs
If you already need a scaffold for a re-roof, that's the moment to also do the chimney, fascias and any high-level pointing. Doing them separately means paying for access twice.
