Leadwork, valleys, chimney abutments, low-pitch details and flat-to-pitch junctions. These are the details that leak, and they're learned rather than looked up.
Where a builder is usually fine
Structural work, extensions where the roof is a simple covered deck, and jobs where the roof element is small and standard within a larger project.
Questions worth asking
Who is physically doing the roof? Is leadwork subcontracted? Which underlay and fixing spec is being used? What happens if rotten timber is found once the tiles are off?
Insurance and documentation
Ask for public liability cover and expect photo documentation of the work at the stages you can't see. Any competent contractor will provide both without fuss.
