GRP fibreglass flat roofs: pros, cons and when to choose them
GRP (glass-reinforced plastic, or fibreglass) gives a hard, seamless flat-roof finish that's ideal where a roof gets walked on or needs to look crisp. It's the system we reach for on balconies, terraces and complex flat roofs.
What GRP is and where it shines
GRP is fibreglass matting laid wet and cured into one rigid, jointless skin with a coloured topcoat. Because it's hard-wearing it suits balconies, walk-on terraces, dormers and any flat roof where appearance matters — the finish is smooth and can be colour-matched.
GRP vs EPDM
EPDM is a flexible rubber sheet — faster, cheaper and brilliant on simple roofs. GRP is rigid — better where the roof is walked on or has lots of detail to dress neatly, but more expensive and weather-dependent to install (it needs dry, mild conditions to cure).
Where GRP can go wrong
GRP's rigidity is its weakness on roofs that flex — a poorly supported deck or one that moves can hairline-crack the laminate. Proper, well-fixed decking and correct trims are everything. Done on a solid deck it's superb; rushed onto a bouncy deck it fails early.
Typical lifespan and timeline
A correctly installed GRP roof lasts 25–30 years. Install takes a little longer than EPDM because of curing time and the need for dry weather, so we plan GRP jobs around the forecast.
FAQs
Neither is 'better' outright — GRP wins for walk-on terraces and crisp detailing; EPDM wins for simple roofs, speed and cost. We recommend based on the deck, use and budget.
Yes — that's one of its strengths. With a non-slip topcoat it makes a durable balcony or terrace surface.
Around 25–30 years on a solid, well-fixed deck. The main cause of early failure is laying it over a deck that flexes.
